Sunset over Bahia de Caraquez

Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador

We are right at the three year mark! Dave and I landed here on January 5th of 2011. It has been an amazing three years of  learning “how things work”  in a different culture, stretching our hearts and heads to adapt, and expanding our minds  to embrace thriving in a new land. We lived in Cotacachi for 6 months, then moved to Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador  because we found it a tad too cold for us in the Andes.  Here is a sunset picture from our 8th floor balcony overlooking the Pacific ocean. We have gone through the excitement of being a “newbie” and have now settled into a more typical routine of daily living. We walk on the beach most every morning. I shop at the local market three to four times a week.  I know so many people in our little town of Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador, not all of them by name, but these folks are my friends, smiling and chattering away, glad to help me, even with my limited Spanish! With a smile and a warm attitude, I have seldom met an unfriendly person in the whole country. Yes, three years and thriving here!

Real Estate & Rentals in Ecuador

Kitchen & Island

Kitchen & Island

Dave & I have found a niche for our Real Estate and rental business. It keeps us more than busy at times! We have enjoyed building friendships and helping folks connect their dream to the reality of living in Ecuador!  Dave handles property for sale in Ecuador and I cover the condos for rent, both long and short term rentals in Bahia de Caraquez. We love sharing what we have experienced, helping folks make the transition to living here, and generating a new  life.

Cultural Adjustment To Living In Ecuador

It has not been without it’s challenges. Adjusting to our new country meant times of sadness as we grieved the loss of our old life. Even with the huge improvement of our  quality of life here in Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador, we had to give our selves time to adjust and embrace our new life.   This is a subject not many talk about. It hasn’t been all glamorous and fun all the time. We had to dig deep and mine some personal gold so to speak. We pondered some weighty issues like our ability to not only accept the new culture of “manana” but to actually appreciate it and cherish it. Maybe we could learn something…imagine that! Our North American mindset  tries to assert itself, but we now live in South America…and we are catching on! Manana is just fine for most things. Less stress, more walking, eating fresh foods straight from the local market, wonderful fresh air, and Oceanfront living have all factored in for an improved lifestyle…..yes, life is good! It’s all good!!

We Wish All of You Happy Holidays and a Very Prosperous New Year!

Hello, Congrats on your “anniversary” We will be looking for a rental on the coast around May or June. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Dave & Miriam says:

Hi Brian, I will send you an email also, but yes, I have several things that could work for you. Do you have an idea of how long you will need a rental? How many will be in your party?

  2. Leigh Frost says:

Congratulations on hitting the 3-yr mark.
So true about giving yourself time to adjust, but looks like you all have settled right in!!

    • Dave & Miriam says:

Thanks Leigh! Living in Ecuador is a challenge. It’s great to know you guys are “just down the road” a bit! It’s so wonderful to have good neighbors!

  3. carol watral says:

What medical facilities are in the Bahia and Canoa areas please?

    • Dave & Miriam says:

We have 5-6 Dr’s right here in Bahia…and there is a good size hospital in Leionidas Plaza, the southern section of Bahia. Canoa…I’m not so sure. It is 20 minutes north of here. We also have 4-5 Dentists that I and my husband have used. No problems.

  4. Melissa says:

Thank you for your wonderful website! Would you have any recommendations for areas &/or properties for a young family? We have 2 young boys and like the idea of exposing them to such things as the “mañana culture” as they grow older :). We are considering a purchase of a condo property that would start out as a vacation home and could ultimately become a retirement home or investment. Any info/advice you might have is greatly appreciated!

    • Dave & Miriam says:

Hi Melissa, Thanks you for the compliment! When are you planning a trip here to Ecuador? That is the first thing…..come here and experience the “manana” culture and see how things feel first hand. Are you a beach person or a mountain person? Meanwhile i invite you to subscribe to our web…look on the right side of the page and hit subscribe. Please contact us when you are on the way here…check flights into Guayaquil(GYE). Miriam
