Ecuador Living On The Ruta Del Sol
Today was another north coast of Ecuador tour all the way from Bahia de Caraquez to Cojimies, about an hour north of Pedernales. The terrain is more tropical and green the further north you go. We took the new bypass around Canoa promising everyone we would stop there on the way back to get a better feel for the area, especially for the section just south of Canoa that is gaining traction with more and more completed condos along with several developments springing up in the last six months. This area is the next section of the north coast to “pop” after the opening of the new bridge that spans the Chone river from Bahia de Caraquez to San Vicente. It has long been predicted that this bridge will open up the entire north coast.
North Coast of Ecuador Tour
We determined to drive to Pedernales for a lunch break, then press on up into the peninsula to Cojimies. The further north we went, the more tropical in nature it became with palm tree plantations and some of the most beautiful stretches of beaches we have ever seen in Ecuador! This is truly a special place! My husband Dave Causey was privileged to fly this portion of the coast line in a small private plane about a year ago with one of the coconut plantation owners. What a beautiful coastline! Some of the most stunning beaches of Ecuador are here! However…..(there is always a however….) the infrastructure of stores, ATM’s, places to shop, restaurants for dining, the little things needed for daily living are harder to find. There is no ATM as of this writing in June of 2013 between Pedernales and Bahia de Caraquez. We have been living here in Ecuador since January of 2011 and there is no ATM in Canoa or Jama. In Bahia (where we live) ATM service is ample; we’re thinking about half a dozen. But going north on the coast, the next ATM is in Pedernales. It is something to consider when pondering where to live in Ecuador. We live on Dave’s Social security, so we pull our money out of a nifty ATM several times a month and it’s easier to walk 3 blocks to down town Bahia than to take a taxi or bus for a 30 or 40 minute ride to get the cash fix . Dave & I are no longer in vacation mode or the honey moon stage…we are settled into normal daily living where convenience and ease make for overall happiness.
Right after lunch we drove into Cojimies, a little fishing village where the local fisherman will give you a boat ride up to Mompiche if you like. I’m not sure how much that costs, but you’re expected to do some bargaining to negotiate the price! You can get a private fishing guide to take you fishing in the bay for Dorado (mahi mahi) and corvina (sea bass) and a variety of salt water fish including pecudo & wahoo. It’s a fishing village with mud in the rainy season (Jan/Feb/March) and dust in the dry season (June/ July/Aug). On the way south again we stopped several places along the way to take photos of the Ocean, the rolling hills and coconut palm plantations. We even had a herd of about 60 cows cross the road in front of us!
On the way back, we stopped in Canoa proper, pointing out some favorite places to hang out and get almuerzo or grab a hamburger. There are wonderful street vendors selling tagua jewelry, hats, sunglasses and more. Canoa has many short term vacationers and back packers…..it’s aspiring to be Montanita’s cousin as party central! It’s great to spend the day there, watching the surfers, and eating some terrific ceviche . It does get loud especially on the weekends with heavy Latin American music blasting from many bars!
